Philanthropy

Dear Friends:

From its modest beginnings as a single-faculty division in the 1950’s, the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami School of Medicine now includes over 63 world-renowned researchers and clinicians trained in all of the neurological subspecialties. Patients are referred to our experts from all over the world.

In the past five decades, the Department has achieved its fantastic growth due to grants, clinical revenue and the generosity of grateful patients and friends. Last year, the Department was awarded more than $6 million in grants, generated over $5 million in clinical revenue and received over $2.3 million in gifts.

Private support has been an essential part of the growth and success of the Department of Neurology. It continues to make the critical difference in our ability to provide interdisciplinary patient care and to support crucial translational research. The Kessenich Family MDA ALS Center is one such example.

The Kessenich Family MDA ALS Center is the only multidisciplinary ALS center in Florida. Our Center, since its opening on March 4th, 1998, is the major referral center for the South Eastern United States, the Caribbean, Central and South America. The Kessenich Family Center is known throughout the world for its state of the science patient care and research, including its participation in all the major trials of new experimental medications for ALS. The name of Mark Kessenich, Jr. is synonymous with the highest level of care for ALS patients, which is only fitting since this was the goal that Mark and his family had when they established the Center.

Private philanthropy continues to play a fundamental role with Momentum: the Campaign for the University of Miami, launched in October, 2003. The Kessenich Family MDA ALS Center is an essential part of our efforts in the Department of Neurology as we realize the vision for the future. I invite you to join with us at this pivotal time and give your support by making a gift today.

With all best wishes,

Walter G. Bradley, D.M., F.R.C.P.
